Margaret Island

A recreation oasis on the Danube, this is is one of the most popular places to run in Budapest. Located 1.2 miles north of the Chain Bridge, the island has gardens, swimming pools, cafes, and a combination of shaded and waterfront paths. In summer, there’s a fun fountain water/music display at night.

For runners, there’s a flat, 5.3 km (3.2 mile) rubberized ‘runners only’ running track encircling the outer perimeter of the island, with good views of the Danube and also pleasant shading in parts. This might be one of the largest running ‘tracks’ in the world!

We love doing one part of the loop on the track and the other part on the interior paths, which are shaded and lovely.

Access to Margaret Island: If on the Buda side, need to take the underground passage to get onto the north side of Margit Bridge, then take the pedestrian ramp to the island.

Add-Ons: Other paths on island, and additional paths on both the Buda and Pest sides of the river.

Essentials
  • 5.3 km (3.2 mile) track around island; other paths
  • Flat
  • On Island
  • 4/6 tram; H5 Train

I love running at Margit Island whenever I visit Budapest. You can do as many loops as you want, including through the interior path which will take you passing some old ruins and take a pic and upload on Str@va? 🙂
