Arenal Volcano

The Arenal volcano, a recently dormant 1,633 meter cone in north central Costa Rica, is one of the most visited tourist locations in the country. It’s no wonder travelers come from miles around to see this epic site and the lush network of trails surrounding the peak. Most of the trails in the park are flat and easy-going — perfect for a scenic trail run. The classic choice for running in Arenal is the Los Heliconias Trail, a 1.3 km sandy road to the lava fields, with great views of the volcano. MAP. For those seeking a longer run, continue on the Las Coladas Trail, which runs 2 km to the base of the peak. MAP. Runners can also add on the 1.8 km loop to see the massive 400 year old Ceibo trail in the jungle surrounding Arenal.

The Peninsula sector of the park, on the coast of Lake Arenal, is the newest addition the the park. It’s a lovely accessible paved trail that is great for running, with awesome coastal views through green jungle vegetation and boardwalk platforms for admiring the vistas. From the visitors center to the point and back, it’s about 3 km. MAP.
