Folsom: Lake Natoma Loop

Google Street View

This is a scenic route on trails along Lake Natoma. It’s located in Folsom, a lovely suburb 20 miles northeast of Sacramento. It’s also the eastern section of the 32-mile Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail. Do the full 11.3 mile loop or run a section. There are numerous access points, and some additional trails.

The southern end starts at the San Diego Aquatic Center along the eastern side of the lake. There’s the paved multi-use Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail, but to be closer to the lake, stick to the American River Auxiliary Trail (in sections). There are nice lake views in parts, especially over the Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail Bridge, which connects to the Willow Creek Conservation Area, known for its wildlife, birds, beautiful wild flowers in season. At the northern end of the lake is Folsom Powerhouse State Historic Park, there’s a pedestrian bridge adjacent to the historic Rainbow Bridge, crossing to the western side.

The western side paths include the paved Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail and numerous other more rugged paths. About 1/2 of the western side route is alongside the water: miles 7-8 and 10-11.3. Headed south, you’ll pass through Black Miners Bar State Park, Rollingwood Bluffs, and the Mississippi Bar nature preserve.

Add-Ons: Continue toward Sacramento on the Jedediah Smith Memorial Trail.
