Halifax Residential

Halifax has a fairly compact downtown, with hilly streets running east toward the water, and some longer residential roads running east-west. This is a guide to some of the most pleasant streets for running in central Halifax. Rather than proscribe a particular route, we provide some information on particular streets and section distance options. These are also some of the main roads whose sidewalks will be properly maintained in winter.

Spring Garden Road./Morris St. Main commercial street, with tony shops & restaurants. Can be busy. Main section is 0.75 miles from Robie to Barrington. Return along Morris St., which has some fun, colorful row houses.

Coburg Rd. The western section of Spring Garden Rd. More residential, good way to get to pleasant running around Dalhousie Univ. Good side roads in this area as well.

Young St. Some of the more interesting architecture in Halifax. Nicest stretch is the 0.5 miles between Barrington St. and Robie St. Not to be confused with Young Ave.!

South Park St. & Young Ave. A great 1.5 mile one way stretch is to run on South Park St. starting at Sackville, which turns into Young Ave. all the way to Point Pleasant Park. Some of the nicer homes and apartment buildings in Halifax along this stretch, including some lovely Victorians. Extend by running in Point Pleasant Park, or north 0.7 miles along Bell Rd. through the Common.

Connaught Ave. Good street for running. It’s just over 1 mile from Jubilee Rd. north to the intersection with Rt. 102

North End. Some quiet, hilly side roads in this area. Novalea Dr. is a good 1 mile straight shot from Fort Needham Memorial Park to Rt. 111.
