Hamburg, Germany

Alster Lake

This route in the center of the city circles the park-lined perimeter of Aussenalster lake, and is probably the most popular place for running in Hamburg. The 4.6 mile loop can be accessed anywhere, but a good point of reference is the Fährdamm boat landing on the west side of the lake (the start of many local races). From here, runners can set out either clockwise or counter clockwise — the paved walkway along the lake is straightforward and easy to follow. Though some sections parallel busy streets, much of the path directly hugs the water, highlighting parks, bridges, and docks. For more information on this route, visit joggingroutes.org.
