Hamburg, Germany

Altona Neighborhood

The Altona neighborhood, to the west of central Hamburg, is a gorgeous place to run for its stately architecture and lengthy paths along the Elbe River. Most runners start out near the Altona train station at Platz der Republik. Run straight through the park to the town hall and numerous government buildings. Cross Palmaille and Kaistraße roads to Altona’s Balkon. At the other end of the park, the route meets Kaistraße and stretches downriver to Neumühlen and the Övelgönne neighborhood. Here, join the beautiful Elbwanderweg river path, enjoying lovely water views. Continue around the harbor to Jenisch Park. Runners can return the way they came or loop back through the gorgeous tree lined Elbchaussee neighborhood, using any of the longer streets south of Behringstraße that parallel the river.
