Litchfield Hills, Connecticut

Barkhamsted Reservoir/Saville Dam

The Saville Dam is one of the most photographed destinations in the Litchfield Hills, with gorgeous stone turrets rising from the Barkhamsted Reservoir. The dam sits near the intersection of Routes 219 and 318 just north of New Hartford. The highways are rather busy, so not ideally suited for running, but the area surrounding the dam itself has a wide shoulder and a stone walkway. We’ve put together a 3.8 mile out and back route starting at the dam, following Saville Dam Rd. and Beach Rock Rd. Runners can also connect to any number of dirt access roads surrounding the reservoir.

Essentials
  • 3.8 miles out and back
  • 432 feet
  • Saville Dam
  • Parking turnoff on Saville Dam Road
