Moosehead Lake

Dana Moos

This massive lake, which is just west of Baxter State Park and the 100 Mile Wilderness, is one of the top destinations in central Maine for tourists, and that’s no surprise. The largest mountain lake in the eastern US, Moosehead is known for its conservation efforts — moose outnumber people here 3:1. The only major towns surrounding the lake, Greenville and Rockwood, are still relatively small, so your options for running are mostly limited to out and back routes on quiet backroads. One popular choice is the northern section of Lily Bay Road, which traverses the shore of the lake just past Lily Bay State Park. You can combine this with a run on the public access lands, which include a flat 2-mile walking trail following the shoreline. You can also branch out onto the many cross-country trails the park has to offer.
