Dauphin Island

Alabama considers the beaches of the Gulf Coast to be one of its best kept travel secrets, and visitors to Mobile are in for a treat — the white sugary beaches of Dauphin Island are only 45 minutes away. This is a great spot for a destination run if you have a few hours of free time. The island’s main strip, Bienville Boulevard, has a wide paved bike path which runs across almost the whole island, from Fort Gains in the east to the West End Public Beach. It’s about 7.5 miles one way. Classic sand, water, and beach shacks.

For those who enjoy beach running, West End Beach is a great spot to continue for several miles on the flat open beach.

Add-On/Options: It’s possible to run the 4 miles on the bridge/causeway from the mainland to Dauphin Island — there’s a decent shoulder and there are open water views the whole way. Note that it’s a busy road with fast-moving cars, and it is open, exposed…and a bit monotonous.

Essentials
  • Runner’s Choice - path on road or beach, as much as 7.5 milles one-way
  • 64 feet
  • Bienville Boulevard
  • Route 193. It's about 30 miles south of Mobile
