Carrasco and Punta Gorda Neighborhoods

Wikimedia Commons

As a nice variation from the Rambla and beaches, create your own route through these upscale residential neighborhoods located 7 km east of Montevideo. The Punta Gorda neighborhood is the area north of the beach and the Plaza de la Armada, with its bronze sculpture. Enjoy running on some of the tree-lined residential streets, past some of the area’s loveliest homes (generally gated). Head north as far as Fructuoso Rivera Park (~3 km from Plaza de la Armada), which has a couple of km of pleasant, verdant paths.

Just east is the Carrasco neighborhood, which has numerous quiet, tree-lined residential streets with good sidewalks, running east-west or north-south. Some favorite streets/sections: The grand Av. Gral. Rivera and runs west to east for 3.5 km, featuring nice homes, landscaping, and  a nice park just to the north. Also Av Pedro Blanes Viale. From the Sofitel hotel, Av. Costa Rica heading north from the beach is especially pretty.
