Traverse City/Northwest Michigan

North Central State Trail

The North Central State Trail is home to a popular ultra race that covers 61 miles from Gaylord to Mackinaw City. This flat bike path is considered some of the best riding (and running!) in the midwest, with rolling country scenery, marshes, river spreads, and plenty of amenities along the way. Since not all of us are up for a 61 mile one-way run, pick any section of the trail that suits you. It’s 7.6 miles from Gaylord to Vanderbilt, 10.9 miles from Vanderbilt to Wolverine, 9.6 miles from Vanderbilt to Indian River, 5.6 miles from Indian River to Topinabee, 6.6 miles from Topinabee to Mullett Lake, 5.3 miles from Mullett Lake to Cheboygan, and 16.3 miles from Cheboygan to Mackinaw City. The areas around the Sturgeon River and the banks of Mullett Lake are particularly scenic.

We’ve included a link to an interactive trail map, and a PDF map with segment distances.
