Located on the southern side of Mount Desert Island on Somes Sound, Northeast Harbor is another lovely spot on the ‘quiet’ part of the island. In town, there are great views of yachts and fishing boats, and numerous shops, galleries, and restaurants. Post-run treat: Little Notch Bakery and CafĂ©. Our recommendations for running:

Sargent Rd. This is a popular road for biking and running. It’s 4.4 miles from Northeast Harbor north to Rt. 3. There are water views much of the way. There’s not much of a shoulder but the speed limit is 25 MPH, and it’s fairly quiet except in peak season.

Northeast Harbor. Enjoy the quiet, pretty side streets of this protected harbor. Make sure to include a jaunt down to Smallidge Point (Manchester Rd.), and to Sargent Head. This can be a 4-5 mile create your own route.

Essentials
  • Sargent Rd. from Smallidge Point to Rt. 3 is 4.4 miles (7 km) one-way
  • Sargent Rd. run is 171 feet one-way
  • Depends on route chosen
