The Lakewalk

Wikimedia Commons

The Lakewalk is among the signature places to run in Duluth. The multi-use path follows Rt. 61 along Lake Superior from the Canal Park area for about 8 miles, north to Brighton Beach. There are spectacular views of the lake, especially for the first 4 miles. Just south of Glensheem, the path turns inland and is more wooded rather than featuring lake views. A recommended 7.5 mile out and back is from downtown to S. 26th Ave. E. This part is all along the water. Notes: The Lakewalk is cleared of snow in winter. Also, check here for updates on trail closures/detours.

There are two options for the start. The Duluth Lakewalk trail map shows the start at Bayfront Festival Park, which features a lovely initial 1.5 miles around Canal Park to the Veterans Memorial (you can also start at the Lake Superior Maritime Visitor Center at N Pier). This first several miles of the trail is fantastic, with great views, winding through Leif Erikson Park and the Duluth Rose Garden. Just past the Chapel on the Lake (26th St.), the path turns more inland, crossing over Highway 61. The next ~3 miles are through the Glensheen area, to Lester Park. Here, you can continue toward the water (University Park), and enjoy the path/road along Brighton Beach for ~1 mile. There are great views of the lake here. There are also some trails in Lester Park, which are more ‘trail running’.

Add-Ons: Additional waterfront paths around the Bayfront at the south end; trails in Lester Park at the north end
