Red Deer, Alberta

Kevin Klerks

Red Deer is a city of 100,000, located in central Alberta midway between Calgary and Edmonton. Located on the Red Deer River, the geograpny is rolling hills and a combination of prairie and boreal forest. Running in Red Deer centers on its impressive network of 110 km of trails that traverse the Waskasoo Park system — 23 km of which are maintained in winter!

The best places to run in Red Deer center on the trails along both banks of the Red Deer River, which can be combined with other parks and the McKenzie River Trails. Another fun route is to combine the Bower Ponds with Waskasoo Park or Maskepetoon Park. Paved paths run through a linear park system for 11 km in eastern Red Deer. North of the city, a paved multi-use path connects Blackfalds with Lacombe.

Runners should note Red Deer’s winters are cold and can be snowy. This map shows which roads & trails are cleared in winter.
