Ilmatsalu–Kärevere Linnutee Hiking Trail

Google Street View

The Ilmatsalu–Kärevere Linnutee Hiking Trail, located 12 km west of Tartu, is a nice spot for some easy, flat, off-road running. The area is popular for bird watching, featuring some 200 species. The main trail, nicknamed the ‘Bird Trail’, is nearly 3.5 km long, and follows the Ilmatsalu River bank. So it’s 7 km out & back. It’s open, wetland type terrain, with lovely views. There’s an observation tower for bird viewing.

We’ve also mapped a 7 km ‘loop’ option. Follow the ‘Bird Trail’ for 2.4 km to the lmatsalu jõe Bridge (sild=bridge), then head north for 0.9 km, turning RIGHT for 1.6 km to Tenno Tee. RIGHT for 2 km back to the start.

Essentials
  • 'Bird Trail' is nearly 3.5 km one-way; We've also mapped a 7 km (4.4 mile) loop option
  • 26m (88 feet) for loop option
  • Ilmatsalu, near the youth center
  • Parking area @Ilmatsalu Park, just south of the trailhead
