Adriatic Coast, Italy

Otranto: Centro Storico & Waterfront

Creative Commons: Sciurti Luca

There’s nice running in Otranto, combining a short tour of the historical center, a short waterfront promenade, and a traffic-free road along the narrow (and dry) Idro River. Otranto is a beautiful town located on the eastern coast of the Italian Adriatic Coast, known for its charming medieval streets,  coastal views, food, and vibrant nightlife. Pro tip: enjoy a post-run dip in the ‘public baths’!

Southern Section: Start with a short tour on the path skirting the historical center (centro storico), with the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annunziata and the Chiesa di San Pietro. Then, follow the waterfront path around the marina and north along the coast, enjoying the sea views. This path goes for ~1 km, with a short on-road section. You can double back and continue for another 0.5 km along the coastal road, which is relatively traffic free (note: no sidewalk/shoulder). Then, on your way back, is an optional ~2 km out & back along the narrow, dry Idro REiver. It’s a narrow, quiet road/path.

Northern Section: Another path winds along the coast and a bit inland for 2.8 km, between Lido La Castellana and the Cala di San Pietro dei Canali (public bath in the sea). It’s a bit more rugged but very runnable!

Essentials
  • Southern Section: 5.7 km (3.6 miles); Northern Section: 5.6 km (3.6 miles) out & back
  • Inland sections are hillier
  • Southern section: Centro Storico; Northern Section: Lido La Castellana
