Costa dei Trabocchi: Fossacesia to Ortona Waterfront Cycle Path

viaverdedeitrabocchi.info

In the area just south of Pescara along the Abruzzo coastline, there’s a long-distance cycle path that runs for nearly 20 km from Fossacesia north to Ortona, paralleling the SS16. Its coast is varied, ranging from sandy beaches towards the north to rocky spurs that stretch into the sea to the south.

Much of this path follows an old train line and runs right along the water, with great sea views. It’s recently developed, and mainly paved. Along much of it, there’s a separate lane for pedestrians, with some sections of separate waterfront pedestrian path (lungomare). Below are some of the best sections, broken down into segments from south to north.

Fossacesia Marina to Spiaggia di Valle Grotte, San Vito. 6 km one-way. Wide, gravel cycle path, right along the water.

Spiaggia di Valle Grotte to Info Point San Vito Chietino. 3 km one-way. Mainly paved cycle path, right along the water, with wonderful views.

Spiaggia di Calata Cintioni, San Vito to Spiaggia Lido Saraceni, Orotona. 6 km.  Mainly paved path, beautiful views.

Spiaggia della Ritorna to North End of Path. 1.5 km.  Paved path, beautiful water views. This section north of Ortona is away from the main road.

Note: A bus route runs along the SS16, allowing for a one-way runs!
