In this post, we explore some running options in the east side of Hamilton.

Parks and East Bank River Walk. One can put together a nice run combining Claudelands Park, Parana Park, and paths along the east side of the Waikato River. Start with a loop around Claudelands Park — a wide, open expanse next to the Claudelands Showgrounds and Event Centre. We include adjacent Jubilee Park, which features a boardwalk trail through the remnants of a Kahikatea forest. This is is ~2.5 km. Then, head south for 1 km on a road section to Parana Park [L on Heaphy Terrace, R on Oneill, L on River Rd.]. It’s 1 km on the River Walk path through this park, which features Kowhai trees and native bird sculptures. Then, you can continue on the River Walk path for 2 km through New Memorial Park and Hayes Paddock as far as Hamilton Gardens. This section is a combination of woods and water views.

University of Waikato Campus. The University is located in Hillcrest, 3.5 km east of Hamilton Central. It features an attractive campus with pleasant pedestrian paths. One can put together a 3-4 km loop here, including loops around three small lakes — Knighton Lake, Oranga Lake, Chapel Lake — and then a loop around the large open field.
