For some nice variety and scenery, we recommend a run on the Conservation Levee Greenway. Located about 20 minutes west of Fort Lauderdale’s hotels, there are many miles of trails atop a series of levees in the area of the Everglades Wildlife Management Area. The landscape is a mix of wetlands and sawgrass prairie. The dirt surface has generally decent footing, but this is a ‘trail run’. Note: Open & exposed — no shade. Also can get a bit monotonous.

Although there are miles of levees, the best bets for running are:

Levee 35, between Sawgrass Recreation Park and Sawgrass Expressway off Atlantic Blvd. You can start at either end, but there’s more parking/facilities at the park. Total distance is 10.6 miles.

Levee 67A. This trail starts at Everglades Holiday Park off Griffin Rd./US 27, and runs southwest for some 27 miles to Hwy 41. The terrain is similar to that of Levee 35.

There are other levee trails that can be enjoyed as well.
