Elliott’s Beach

Pekka Myllyla

Elliott’s Beach (Besant Nagar) offers another good promenade for running in Chennai. Though not as long as the promenade along Marina Beach, it’s a nice path, the beach is also runnable, and there are some good additional nearby spots to make for a longer run. An out and back is 4.5 km (2.8 miles). Landmarks include the Sri Ashtalakshmi Temple, dedicated to the 8 avatars of Goddess Lakshmi, and the Karl Schmidt Memorial.

For a longer run, we recommend the area just west. Run west along the Garden of Remembrance to the famous Adyar Banyan Tree, and then around Besant Gardens. Take Besant Ave., or run the paths in the gardens (limited opening hours). Adds 3-4km. We’ve also put together a more extensive run for this entire area, and across the Thiru Vi Ka Bridge and some nice roads around Adyar River.
