This is a lovely and unique run along Lanarka Salt Lake, which is a series of four lakes, three of them interconnected. This is a popular spot for walking, as well as heaven for birdwatchers, where in winter thousands of pink flamingos make this a stop on their migratory route. The lake is filled with water in winter, and dry in summer.
The ‘Salt Lake Hiking Trail’ is a very runnable, wide trail that skirts the northern section of the lake. It’s a wonderful 8 km (5 mile) out and back. Note: Avoid middle of the day in height of summer — the trail is inland and exposed!
