Southeast Düsseldorf: Südpark, Volksgarten, & More

Wikimedia Commons

Located in the Oberilk neighborhood in southeast Düsseldorf, Südpark is the city’s largest and most visited park! With some 30 km of paths, this is a great place for a run, with plenty of variety and interesting sights. The park, and our route, is divided into three sections (great map with sections and features). Starting at the Südpark U-Bahn station, run through the Vor dem Deich area of water and meadows, on the east side of the lake, for ~1 km (great gym/fitness center nearby). Then take the In den Gärten paths, which are landscaped themed gardens separated by hedges. There are sports fields and recreational facilities just west of the path.  At just past the 2 km mark, head into the more historic Volksgarten (people’s park), which features numerous intersecting paths, with a combination of landscaped gardens, meadows, and woods. This is a 2-3 km section. We’ve mapped a route, but there are lots of options to vary the paths and add on.

Longer Run/Add-On: Just south of Südpark is the pleasant campus of the University of Düsseldorf, and the Botanical Gardens that they run, which can be a 4-5 km add-on. It’s the southern loop in our route map.
