Ruhr River Paths: Spillenburger Wehr Section

While Baldeneysee is the most popular running route along the Ruhr River, there are plenty of other starting points that can result in a great run. Another good, close-to-the-city, option starts from Spillenburger Wehr (an old lock on the river). From the Am Ruhrwehr bus stop, head northeast along the waterfront path. You’ll cross two small bridges on either side of the small island. Continue straight past the third bridge, and the path bends inland towards Essen-Horst station. Cross the river at Campingplatz Horster Ruhrbrücke, then turn right to continue northwest past Leuchtturm. Finally, cross the Langenberger Street bridge, then turn left to return to the start.

Note: You can also start closer to central Essen, say near the Essen-Steele Ost transit station.
