Located 30 km southeast of Genoa, Portofino is a coastal fishing village famous for its pastel-colored houses, high-end boutiques, and yachts gracing the harbor. The best place to run in Portofino is the gorgeous coastal road between Santa Margherita and Portofino. Great views the whole way along a recently improved sidewalk. Simply follow the main coastal road (#227) for 5.5 km between the towns, flat between S. Margherita and Paraggi, and then hillier between Paraggi and Portofino. For more, run/walk the path from Portofino to Castello Brown and the Lighthouse, which adds 2 km (very hilly) out and back.
Longer run: Can also run for another 3.5 km along the coastal road to Rapallo and the Museo del Merletto. Water views some of the way, good sidewalk, rolling hills. Bonus: Good bus service along this road, allowing for one-way options!
Additional Options. The area around Portofino has some wonderful walking and hiking. All the smaller roads heading up from town are pretty, but hilly. The walk to San Fruttuoso is famous, and hilly, and can be done as a trail run. Numerous other trails in this area, called Portofino Park.
