Haarlem: Waterside Routes, Parks, & Tulip Fields!

Mark Lowenstein

Haarlem is the regional capital of North Holland known for its medieval character, port, and surrounding flower fields. The best places to run in Haarlem are along its extensive network of waterways, several parks, and quiet roads & paths around farm and tulip fields outside town.

Binnen Spaarne Canal, Park, Old Town. This is a favorite route in Haarlem. Run south on paths along the pretty Binnen Spaarne, admiring the canal-side houses. Then return through the long & narrow Frederikspark and the cobbled streets of Haarlem old town. MAP

Northern Waterside Routes: Run north on the Spaarndamseweg along the western side of the Spaarne. It’s ~4 km to Spaarndam. A nice add-on close to town is west along the Kloppersingel to De Bolwerken Park and then south to KenauparkMAP

Parks: Put together several km in Spaarnwoude Park. There are hiking & biking paths along small canals, and around peat meadows.

Zuid-Kennemerland National Park. Just west of Haarlem and only 40 km from Amsterdam, this park is running heaven. There are hundreds of km of cycle paths & hiking paths, and a wonderful variety of terrain: open fields, woods, open sand dunes, and a beach. Helpful to go to the Visitors Center for recommendations!  INFORMATION  Cycle & Hiking Map

Flower Fields. Run on quiet roads and paths past giant flower fields. Tulip season is in mid to late April. Good spots near Haarlem include Noordwijkerhout & Keukenhof.
