Cradle of Humankind

South Africa Tourism

This UNESCO-recognized anthropological site is named in tribute to the remarkable variety and number of hominid fossils found on its grounds, but that’s not the only worthwhile attraction at the Cradle of Humankind. Runners will love the dirt and cement paths around the park as well as the paved cycling lanes lining the surrounding roads. Most start from the visitor’s center at Maropeng and set out in a loop. There is a popular 5 km circuit, used for races, that incorporates a variety of the best paths. Head south from the visitor’s center towards R400, then turn RIGHT onto the dirt path which returns north. At the 90 degree angle at the end of the path, turn RIGHT again. At the fork near the set of buildings, turn RIGHT again to return southwest back to Maropeng.

The Cradle of Humankind is about 40 km northwest of Johannesburg an only reachable by car.
