Truckee Legacy Trail

Wikimedia Commons

This is another path along the Truckee River, heading north from Truckee for 4.4 miles to Union Mills. The gravel path parallels Glenshire Dr., and is at or near river grade for most of its length. Parts of the trail are above the river through shaded, pine-scented sections, while others are closer to the river, with nice views. In Truckee, the trailhead is at Truckee River Regional Park, near downtown (use Bridge St.). At the 1.5 mile mark, there’s a spur of the Legacy Trail that goes for 0.5 miles toward the Riverview Sports Park. From the Truckee end, the trail is a gradual downhill, except for a 0.3 steep climb between miles 3.8 and 4.1.

Add-Ons/Variety: The main roads in this area aren’t that pleasant and don’t have good shoulders. For some quieter roads, the quiet residential streets just south of downtown and east of Rt. 89 in the Ponderosa Pallisades area are nice for running. Also, 4 miles north of town is the Tahoe Donner Trout Creek Recreation Center, which is a good base for running on some quiet, hilly residential streets (just east of the rec center).

Essentials
  • 4.4 miles (7.1 km) one-way, or 8.8 miles (14.2 km) out and back
  • 275 feet (one-way). Most of gain is at 3.8-4.1 miles
  • Truckee: Truckee River Regional Park
  • Parking at Truckee River Regional Park
