The Golovec Hill is the large mound to the southeast of downtown Ljubljana, home to several great running trails, including the “Heart Trail” maintained by the Society for Health of the Heart and Vascular System of Slovenia, which leads up to the astronomical observatory. Y

ou can access the path from Pot na Golovec, near the botanical gardens. It’s less than 2 km east of Old Town. From there, it winds uphill to the observatory with great views looking back on the village below and out at the mountain ranges ahead. You can make the route a loop by connecting to the Ob potoku path along the river, then doubling back on the left hand trail off Hrusevska cesta. All in all, this mostly dirt route is about 4.5 miles (7.2 km), complete with two tough hill climbs.

Essentials
  • 4.5 miles (7.2 km)
  • 800 feet (244 meters)
  • Rosca cesta
  • Streliška Bus Stop

I ran a version of this yesterday and it was great! I ran along Litijska cesta for 3 k, then up the mountain at Krozna pot bus stop. Unlike many other hilly places I’ve run, once up the (long) hill, there was a rather long, almost flat trail to run, following where barbed wire enclosed Ljubljana for three years during WWII. Well worth the effort!
