Coimbra, Portugal

CC by 2.0

Coimbra is the fourth largest city in Portugal. Located on the Mondego River, Coimbra is an important center for the middle of the country, and is known for its monuments, churches, libraries, museums, parks, nightlife, & cultural life centered around the University of Coimbra. There some decent running in Coimbra, but owing to the city’s density, it’s centered on a few specific areas.

The best place to run in Coimbra is on the several km of paths along the Mondego River, which also features several lovely riverside parks. As a separate route or extension of the river paths, enjoy the shaded trails of the Choupal National Forest. Our ‘Runseeing’ Tour is also a gem, featuring key sites, historic parks, and the fifth-oldest botanical gardens in the country.

Runner Notes: Coimbra’s terrain is quite hilly away from the water. Summers can be hot but aren’t brutal.
