Don Det and Don Kohn are twin islands in the Mekong River in the Si Phan Don (“Four Thousand Islands”) archipelago in Champasak Province of southern Laos. These car-free islands are connected by a small bridge at the southern end of Don Det. Don Det is accessible via small ferry from Don Som. Running on Don Det is magical, featuring lush tropical vegetation, paddy fields, and pretty views of the Mekong River. Our thanks to Lena Andersson, CEO of Go! Running Tours, for suggesting this location!
Our main run consists of a scenic loop around Don Det. Part of it is on a paved path along the former Don-Det Railway. It’s possible to add a few more km on Don Khon, which features a 13 km walking path around the island.
Runner Notes: Be aware of the heat and humidity, with temperatures often exceeding 32C. Also, can be very rainy from April-October.
