Natal is the capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte, located in the Northeast Region of Brazil. Situated on the Atlantic Ocean, at the mouth of the Potengi River, Natal is a popular visitor destination for its numerous beaches, and also its spectacular dunes that side above the water. There are some good running options in Natal, mainly focused on the waterfront.
We’ve mapped several spots for good beachside running in Natal. The best waterfront promenade is at Ponta Negra. There’s also good waterfront running just north of there along the edge of Parque das Dunas, and in Petrópolis. The beaches in Natal are also quite runnable. Another highlight is the run over the Ponte Newton Navarro (bridge), with options to extend on each end. The Parque Dom Nivaldo Monte is the best non-waterfront running option in Natal, with a 2.5 km stone-surfaced path. For those who want to attempt some dune running, the best options where it’s permitted are Dunas de Genipabu & Dunas de Graçandú.
Runner Notes: Natal’s weather is hot & humid year-round, with lots of rainfall. Also note that some have expressed safety concerns: use caution, ask at your hotel or your tourist office.
