Podgorica, Montenegro

CC: Janusz Recław

Podgorica is the capital and largest city of Montenegro. It was called Titograd during Yugoslavia’s socialist period between WWII and 1992. Podgorica lies in a fertile plain at the confluence of the Ribnica and Morača rivers, but it surrounded by mountains. The options for running in Podgorica aren’t great: no extensive river paths or larger parks. Still, one can stitch together some decent running in the city.

A great way to see the city and get in a run is our ‘Runseeing’ Tour, which includes important downtown streets & sites, some paths along the Morača River, and several small, lovely parks. Gorica Park is the other go-to run in Podgorica, with 3-4 of mainly forested paths. Just north of there is a ~2 km ‘running track’ in Zlatička šuma.

Runner Notes: Podgocia summers are very hot, with average highs of 34C. The city is also the wettest capital in Europe, with 1700mm of annual rainfall.
