Rijeka, the third largest city in Croatia, is located on on the coast of Kvarner Gulf in the northern Adriatic Sea. It’s a major port city and features a scenic setting, being on the water and surrounded by mountains on three sides. The best running in Rijeka is focused on the waterfront and old town. Once inland, the area becomes very hilly, with fantastic trail running options.
The best place to run in Rijeka is our ‘runseeing’ tour, which includes the Long Pier, Old Town, and some nice parks. Add on with the Trsat Steps & Trsat Castle. Just south of Rijeka is a scenic waterfront path in Preluk. For a fantastic destination run, we love the 7 km coastal path between Opatija and Louvran. There’s also a huge variety of trail running options in the mountainous area surrounding Rijeka. This site has great information & GPS maps.
Note that just inland, the terrain become quite hilly. Also, Rijeka receives quite a bit of rainfall, and the mountains just outside the city can be cold and snowy.
