Near Oshkosh: Terrell’s Island Trail

Creative Commons: Any Bayer

The trail around Terrell’s Island is a great destination run in the Oshkosh area. Located 12 miles west of Oshkosh, this 1200-acre wetlands area juts out into Lake Butte des Morts. A trail runs along the 2-mile breakwall that was constructed to enclose 569 acres of open water at Terrell’s Island for the purpose of restoring fish and wildlife habitat and protect the eroding wetland shoreline.   NOTE: Closed as of December 2022 for reconstruction of the breakwall. Check here for reopening status.

This a scenic area for running, with wonderful water views the whole way.  It’s 4.2 miles out and back. Despite what it looks like on a map, it’s no longer possible to do a loop.

Essentials
  • 4.2 miles (6.8 km) out and back
