The Great Allegheny Passage (GAP) trail is one of the longest continuous off-road trails in the United States. The GAP Trail is a wide, gravel-surfaced trail that runs for 150 miles southeast to Cumberland, MD. The Pittsburgh start point, marked as the ‘150 mile mark’ and counting down from there, starts downtown at Point State Park. The first 5 miles overlaps with the Three Rivers Heritage Trail. Around the Hot Metal Bridge, the GAP trail continues along the Monogahela River.

At the ~17 mile mark in McKeesport, the trail continues along the Youghiogheny River.

Link to the C&O Trail. At Cumberland, the ‘Zero’ mile mark of the GAP Trail, is the start of the C&O Canal Trail, which continues for another 185 miles to Washington, D.C., where it terminates in Georgetown. The GAP/C&O trail is a popular long-distance cycle trip between Pittsburgh and Washington, D.C.  Your Great Runs Chief Running Officer did this ride with 10 friends in May, 2024!
