Queenstown to Fernhill Route

Google Street View

This versatile route offers a combination of a road, lakeside, and residential running. Starting off on Lake Esplanade Rd. near the Real Journeys Visitor Center, follow the Queenstown-Glenorchy road. Them, RIGHT on Fernhill road. Enjoy ‘runseeing’ one of Queenstown’s most prestigious residential suburbs, situated on the lower slopes of the famous Ben Lomond mountain. There are interesting hillside homes and great views as you run up Fernhill Rd. (no shoulder but decent sidewalk). The steepest section is a 100m climb over 0.8 km, with 7-8% grades. Continue on Fernhill Rd., following it back down to Lake Esplanade, and continue on until you reach the main city beach where you can enjoy stunning views, for a post-run stretch.

Add-Ons:  In this area, there are access points to the trails of Ben Lomond Reserve, which are great for hiking or challenging trail running. Favorires are the  Fernhill Loop Track and the Arawata Terrace Track.  Also, you can continue on  lake footpaths in either direction (see our other routes).
