Queenstown to Sunshine Bay Trail

Lana Bukvic

This is a wonderful trail, known as a ‘foot track’, that runs south from Queenstown to Sunshine Bay, along Lake Wakatipu. Great views the whole way along this gravel, rolling hills path. It’s 10 km out and back. We’d consider this a gentle trail run — there are few short climbs, with rocky steps and roots.

The Queenstown end of the trail starts at the intersection of Suburb street and Queenstown Trail. It’s flat at first, and then becomes more up and down.  There are benches along the way, with spectacular views of the lake. The southern end of the trail is at the serene Sunshine Bay Beach. Between November and February, there are lovely blooming lupins along the lake.

Longer Run: For a super long run, combine with the Queenstown Trail and run as far as 10 km north to Frankton!

Essentials
  • 10 km (6.2 miles) out and back
  • 302 feet
  • Queenstown end: intersection of Suburb street and Queenstown Trail; Sunshine Bay End: Beach
