Westerly & Watch Hill

These are three lovely runs around the historic towns of Westerly and Watch Hill.

Westerly Center Run. Very pretty running in this historic center. From the train station, enjoy some of the fun stores and restaurants along Main St., High St., & Grove Ave, and the historic Wilcox Park. Then take a jaunt by the classic Victorian homes along Elm St. Crossing the bridge into Connecticut on Broad St., head southeast on Mechanic St./River Rd, which after a short industrial section has lovely running alongside the Pawcatuck River, for a good 3-4 miles before turning inland (traffic gets a lot less busy after about 2 miles from town).

For more, the residential area running parallel to Mechanic St. has long, flat streets that are good to tack on some miles. For some hill work, use Palmer Rd., which runs perpendicular to Mechanic.

Watch Hill. This historic and exclusive coastal resort is known for its grand Victorian homes lining the peninsula. We’ve put together a gorgeous 6.2 mile loop of the area, highlighting the best streets. You can start from anywhere convenient. But the loop hugs Narraganset Bay on the west side and Block Island Sound on the east side. From Watch Hill Ave. & Avondale Rd., take Avondale Rd. heading south, and keep hugging the coast along Pasadena Ave., Breen Rd., and Foster Cove Rd. Take Wauwinet Rd. into the center of Watch Hill, with its tony shops, historic carousel, and beach. Then curl around to the east side, taking Bluff Ave., Niantic Ave., and Ocean View Highway. The final 1/2 mile is on Rt. 1A. ROUTE MAP

For a longer, beachside run, head over to Misquamicut Beach — from Ocean View Hwy., take Bayberry, and then Maplewood Ave., to Atlantic Ave.
