This is one of two ‘runseeing’ tours of Samarkand and a great way to get oriented to the city. The route is courtesy of our friends at Samarkand Running Tours — we highly recommend the experience of a guided run with them!
Begin at the Amir Timur statue, located at the beginning of University Boulevard and continue running towards Amir Timur mausoleum. After enjoying the beautiful view of the monument, run towards the huge Registan Square with its three main buildings. Then, continue running in the street named after the first Uzbek President Islom Karimov. Pass by the beautiful Bibi-Khanym mosque, located near the Siab bazaar (note: no pictures permitted). The next highlight of your Samarkand Running will be Shakhi zinda necropolis with blue turquoise cupolas. It’s in the area of several historic cemeteries. The final part of your running itinerary leads to the Afrasiab hills, where the original city of Samarkand was founded. After enjoying the beauties of this old heritage, retrace your steps and finish your running near the Hazrat Khizr Mosque with a scenic view over the Bibi-Khanym mosque.
Add-Ons: Run along University Boulevard headed south. Additional paths in several small parks located near the beginning of the route.
- 6.7 km (4.2 miles) out & back, with good add-ons
- 67m (250 feet)
- Amir Timur statue @ north end of University Boulevard
