River Wear Paths

Creative Commons: JThomas

There’s some nice running in Sunderland along the River Wear, which can be combined with our Marina & Roker Beach route for an even longer waterfront run.

Google Street View

The path is mainly along the north bank of the river. The nicest section is the 2 miles between the Watching & Waiting Sculpture west to just past the Stadium of Light. This paved path is right along the water, featuring nice river views. West of there, the path turns inland for ~1 mile, paralleling Wessington Way. West of the Northern Spire Bridge, there’s another nice ~1 mile section along the river.

Longer Run: Combine with our Marina & Roker Beach route. We recommend doing the nicest 2 miles of the River Wear Path (4 miles out and back), then join the Marina route, which is up to 5 miles out and back. Another option to extend the run is 1-2 miles on the south bank of the Wear River, comprising Riverside Park & waterfront paths around the University of Sunderland.
