There’s some nice running in Sunderland along the River Wear, which can be combined with our Marina & Roker Beach route for an even longer waterfront run.
Google Street View
The path is mainly along the north bank of the river. The nicest section is the 2 miles between the Watching & Waiting Sculpture west to just past the Stadium of Light. This paved path is right along the water, featuring nice river views. West of there, the path turns inland for ~1 mile, paralleling Wessington Way. West of the Northern Spire Bridge, there’s another nice ~1 mile section along the river.
Longer Run: Combine with our Marina & Roker Beach route. We recommend doing the nicest 2 miles of the River Wear Path (4 miles out and back), then join the Marina route, which is up to 5 miles out and back. Another option to extend the run is 1-2 miles on the south bank of the Wear River, comprising Riverside Park & waterfront paths around the University of Sunderland.

The best run in Sunderland. Paths around the marina, seafront promenade path, runnable beaches, parks, and paths through the Whitburn Nature Reserve to the Souter Lighthouse.
Some nice parks for running in south Sunderland. We've mapped a 6-mile loop combining Barnes Park & Silksworth. Optional extension to Queen's Heritage Coastal Path. Herrington Country Park is another nice option.
