Chiba is the capital of Chiba Prefecture. Located 40 km east of Tokyo on Tokyo Bay, this city of 1+ million people is also considered part of the greater Tokyo metropolitan area. There’s a large port, the longest artificial beach in Japan, and Kasori Shell Midden, the largest shellmound in the world. This is our guide to running in Chiba, part of our extensive series of greater Tokyo that include central Tokyo, Kawasaki, and Yokohama.
Some of the best places to run in Chiba are two waterfront routes: several km along Tokyo Bay near Tokyo Disney; and between Inagi Seaside Park and Makuhari Seaside Park. In central Chiba, combine paths around Chiba University and Chiba Park. Or, run the Japanese gardens with cherry & plum blossoms in Aobanomori Park, where there’s also a running track. For a unique experience, run the paths around Kasori Shell Midden and combine with the adjacent riverside path.
