In Mattapoisett, Nasketucket Bay State Reservation offers a lovely spot for an easy trail run. The 400-acre reservation features five miles of trails through woods, meadows, and salt marshes to the rocky shores of Nasketucket Bay. The trail surface is a range of grass and dirt, with a sandier trail along Nasketucket Bay. There’s good signage within the reservation. Bonus: The Shaw Farm Trail connects to the Phoenix Rail Trail (0.9 miles).
We’ve put together a 2.4 mile perimeter loop as one option for your run. Starting from the parking lot, take the Bridle Trail for 0.4 miles. Continue onto the Holly Trail for 0.7 miles to the shore, where you have the option of taking the Shoreline Trail (inland) or Saltmarsh Trail (nice views of the bay, but trail is sandy) for ~0.6 miles to the Bridle Trail (briefly), concluding on the Meadow Trail. Enjoy meadows and pine, oak, beech, birch, and remarkably tall holly trees.
Add-On Options: We’ve mapped the Shaw Farm Trail, which connects to the Phoenix Rail Trail. It’s 0.9 miles through woods and farmland. You can also run on some of the roads in the area, such as Brandt Island Rd. & Mattapoisett Neck Rd., which are fairly lightly trafficked (Note: no shoulder/sidewalk).
