Features:
In the Medeu district in eastern Almaty, there’s some nice running the Central Park area and on roads/paths along the Kazachka River. Combine or run separately.
Central Park. Also known as Gorky Park, Central Park is a hub of recreational activity. The park was reconstructed in 2018 and has modern paths, lighting, and facilities. There’s a lake, amusement park, sports facilities, cafes & boat rentals. For running, one can stitch together 4-5 km on the numerous paths. From the parking lot near the lake, head north along the lake on the path to Kopernik St., retrace your steps and then head south to the pool/velodrome area. Then head east on paths toward the Zoo, where there are additional paths just west of the zoo that are nice for running.
Kazachka River & Терренкур Terrenkur Path. This is a very narrow river, with the water hardly visible in sections. From Central Park, the best running is headed south. It’s ~2 km to Abay Ave. (fountain in a small park), using a dedicated path on the west side of the river for most of the way. Headed north, there are paths/roads (not 100% seamless) following the river for ~2 km to Tatibekov St. So overall, one could do ~8 km here.
Терренкур Terrenkur Path. South of Abay Ave., you can continue south on the mainly paved Терренкур Terrenkur path for up to 5 km to the Terrenkur Pond Pavilion. TThere’s also access to Kok Tob Hill from here (thanks to Jonas C. for this route suggestion!)
Add-Ons: Combine with our Almaty ‘Runseeing’ Tour at Zenkov Cathedral/Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen, ~1 km west.
- Central Park: 4-5 km; Kazachka River: ~4 km of roads/paths
- Central Park area is flat; River route is dowhill headed south, uphill headed north
- Central Park parking lot at Aquatic Center
- Parking lot at Aquatic Center or bus along Gogol St.

Don’t miss out on the Терренкур Terrenkur path that heads south for another 5+km! Very nice. Also can add on to head up the Kok Tobe hill from here.
Jonas, thank you for this suggestion! We added this to the Kazachka River route and also as a separate route, with Kok Tobe Hill option.
