The Bahamas

Eleuthera Running Options

Eleuthera is an island in the Bahamas located 80 km east of Nassau. It’s long and narrow, stretching 110 km. The east side faces the Atlantic Ocean, while the west side faces the Grand Bahama Bank and the Caribbean.

The options for running on Eleuthera aren’t great. There aren’t many scenic, traffic-free roads or dedicated paths. The main road, Queen’s Highway, is not safe for running. The best places to run on Eleuthera are some of the quieter roads on different parts of the island, which we highlight below. Notes: most roads open & exposed — be prepared for the heat! Also, be on the lookout for loose dogs.

Banks Road. This is one of the more popular roads for running on Eleuthera. Note that it can be busy sometimes. Use caution!  One good option is the quieter section of Banks Rd. between Carey’s Pond and Double Bay Beach (9-10 km one-way). Another good section is north of Governor’s Harbour along Old Banks Rd. between French Leave and the Sky Beach Club (~10 km one-way).

Tarpum Bay Area. A nice, quiet road goes from Kinky’s Gas Station to Winding Bay (2 km). Then, the road along Winding Bay (~4 km).

Rainbow Bay Beach Area. There are numerous quiet roads off Queen’s Highway here. On the Caribbean side, Wandering Shore Drive runs for 3.3 km. On the Atlantic side, a quiet road runs for ~4 km between Hidden Beach and The Cliffs. It’s narrow here, so you could put together a ~10 km loop combining these roads!  See our suggested 7.5 km ROUTE MAP.

Davis Beach Area. At the northern end of the island, a quiet road runs for 10 km off Queen’s Highway between Lower Bogue and Davis Beach.

Glass Window Bridge Area. At the northern end of the island, the Glass Window Bridge is considered by some the ‘narrowest point of earth’. Run this small section of Queen’s Highway just to do it, and then continue on a quiet road for 4 km north to northern end of the island.

Beach Running Options. There are many wonderful beaches on Eleuthera. Many of them are very narrow. The sand can be soft, with some firmer sections near the water.
