The Bahamas

Grand Bahama/Freeport

The options for running in Freeport and on Grand Bahama Island aren’t great. There are no major waterfront roads or paths, and the main roads generally lack sidewalks. But determined runners can stitch together a decent runs on quieter, interior roads in Freeport, and a longer run on less-trafficked roads outside town. And, some of the beaches on Grand Bahama are excellent for running.

Freeport Area

  • In town, the best option for a longer, seamless run is the series of waterfront roads between Coral Beach and Smith’s Point Beach. Heading west to east, it’s ~4 miles, using Royal Palm Way, Sea Horse Rd., & Midshipman Rd. In the Taino Beach area, head west on Jolly Roger Rd., or use the combination of roads along the beach or W Beach Rd. east toward Smith’s Point Beach. Note: except for a section along Midshipman Rd., no sidewalks.  ROUTE MAP
  • There are also many quiet residential streets off the main roads. We recommend the Sunrise Park neighborhood between E Mall Rd. & Coral Rd. and numerous quiet neighborhoods east of Balao Rd. between Midshipman Rd. and the Grand Bahama Hwy.

Longer Runs on Less-Trafficked Roads. West of Freeport, there’s nice running on Beachway Dr., which extends for 1.6 miles along East Palm Beach, with some nice views of the beach/water. In the Hawksbill Area, Hunter’s Rd./Pinder’s Point Rd. is nearly 4 miles long and fairly quiet. No water views. And Queen’s Highway, which extends ~18 miles between Bain Town and the west end of the island, is generally quiet. It’s not very scenic, and very open/exposed.

Lucayan National Park. The park is famous for its underwater cave systems. There are 2-3 miles of boardwalks and trails in the park that are decent for running. From the parking lot, there are three different trails that head down to Gold Rock Beach. North of the Grand Bahama Hwy., there’s a short loop trail to Burial Mount Cave (mainly a bunch of stairs). And Gold Rock Beach is fantastic for running. PARK INFORMATION

Beach Running Options. There are many wonderful beaches on Grand Bahama. Generally, they aren’t great for running as the sand can be soft. Some of the better ones for running, wider and with firmer sand near the water (situationally) are: Gold Rock Beach, in the area of Lucayan National Park; Coral Beach; and East Palm Beach.
