Point Lobos

Point Lobos is a popular, sometimes crowded spot, but for good reason — it’s one of the most scenic public locations along the length of Big Sur. Lobos is named for the sea wolves (sea lions) whose calls can be heard echoing among the wildflower covered bluffs of this rocky coast. Some trails are better for running than others, but the entire Perimeter Loop, which covers about 4.5 miles of the park’s most scenic trails, is in great condition. Park at the Whaler’s Cove parking lot (or along Highway 1 if the lot is full) and warm up on the staircase to the North Shore Trail. That will carry you to a lovely stand of Cypress trees on the Cypress Trails, before returning via the South Shore Trail and the South Plateau Trail. The combo of coastal views and rolling meadows here is Big Sur at its finest — and what better way to see it than with your own two running feet?
