Just across the Ashley River from Charleston, runners can explore the West Ashley Greenway. The 8.2 mile multi-use trail roughly parallels US 17. The first 3.6 miles are paved, passing through a residential and commercial area. The trail then becomes hard packed dirt, continuing west past neighborhoods, schools, parks, and a marsh. It’s not the most scenic trail, but is a good option for those who want to rack up some miles and stay off-road.
Note: There is also a West Ashley Bikeway, which runs 2.5 miles from Higgins Pier to Wappoo Road.
- Up to 8.2 miles (13.2 km) one-way
- 118 feet (36m) for one-way route, headed west
- East End (closest point to Charleston): Behind the South Windermere Shopping Center
