Callaway Gardens is a gorgeous spot for a destination run. The 2,500-acre man-made gardens were deeded to the State of Georgia by the Callaway family in the 1950s, and is now a popular spot for visitors, 40 miles north of Columbus. There are 10 miles of beautiful trails winding through natural landscapes. The Gardens also has a swimming beach, tennis, and golf. Note: Admission fee required.

Runners can enjoy the 10-mile Discovery Trail bike path. The paved, rolling trail winds through a variety of scenic woodland environments, and stops at all of the gardens and attractions.  There are also 4-5 miles of nature trails, passing azaleas, hydrangeas, and wildflower gardens which also are lovely for running. This page has suggestions for different loop options.

Special Event: Callaway Gardens is famous for its famous Fantasy in Lights display. Named by National Geographic as one of the Top 10 Light Displays in the World. There are beautifully decorated trees including a even-mile Fantasy In Lights Enchanted Forest. Takes place mid-November to early January each year.

Add-On: FD Roosevelt State Park, the former home of FDR, is located adjacent to Callaway Gardens. It’s a popular hiking & trail running spot, with 40 miles of fairly rugged trails. The 23-mile Pine Trail is one of the best longer-distance trail running options in Columbus.
