Denver, CO: Suburbs

Commerce City & Denver International Airport Area

Denver International Airport is 30 miles from downtown Denver, and in the 20 years since it opened, some infrastructure has developed around it. For those staying at one of the cluster of hotels just south and west of the airport Pena Blvd./I-70, or hoping to catch a quick run before or after a flight, here are the best options:

Second Creek Open Space & Other Parks. Just west of the E470 Toll Road, we’ve put together a route combining several parks. Start with 2 miles of paths through Second Creek Open Space & Buckley Ranch Open Space, enjoying flat, open, prairie-like terrain. Then use Landmark Dr. and the path along Unity Pkwy. to connect to Reunion Park, a pleasant park with a couple of ponds. Head back south through Unity Park and use E 105th Ave. to connect to the Buffalo Mesa Trail, back to the start. ROUTE MAP

Rocky Mountain Arsenal NWR: U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service

Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge. Some of the most scenic running in the area. There are 20 miles of scenic trails through grasslands, wetlands, and woodlands. Open year-round, though might be used for X-C skiing after a snowfall. Ambitious runners can do the 14-mile perimeter loop!  TRAIL INFORMATION   TRAIL MAP

  • STAY: Hotels off Pena Blvd. north of I-70

Aurora Options:  See our running guide to nearby Aurora for additional options: Our linear park route, the 14-mile Sand Creek Greenway, and 11 miles of the High Line Canal Trail.
