Walnut Creek Trail & Clive Greenbelt Trail

Google Street View

The series of trails along Walnut Creek make for another pleasant, easy run on paved multi-use paths in northwestern Des Moines. One can run for up to 9 miles to Clive Lake. The residential neighborhoods east of the Walnut Creek Trail (south of I-235) are also lovely for running.

Our starting point is Center Trails Access near Greenwood-Ashworth Park. Head northwest along the Bill Riley Trail/Walnut Creek Trail, following Walnut Creek. The trail turns into the Clive Greenbelt Trail west of University. The path is through mainly open terrain, with some parks and wooded sections, and some glimpses of narrow Walnut Creek. Distances, from the start:

2.0 miles: Grand Ave.
3.0 miles: I-235/Colby Park
5.4 miles: Greenbelt Park
7.2 miles: I-35
8 miles: Campbell Recreation Area
9 miles; Clive Lake

Add-Ons: The residential neighborhoods east of the Walnut Creek Trail (south of I-235) are also lovely for running. Near the start point, can also connect to our Water Works Park/Gray’s Lake route & our other central Des Moines routes.
